Just got a dedicated Windows server and dedicated is the way forward. For any even slightly advanced programming there's no competition between dedicated/vps and shared. On the other hand, VPS does mean sharing resources - for a business site dedicated is going to be much better. But VPS has one major advantage, it's managed (so backed up, easy to restore, etc). To get the same level of service with a dedicated machine requires a tech to by phyiscally present to look after the machine. And that costs.

setiawans: Slicehost doesn't come with a full cPanel-style control panel. They have a basic Slice Manager, and if you want anything beyond that you've got to install it yourself. Fortunately there are a number of decent open source control panels, and even consultants willing to install and configure them for you. (Hi!)

It's amazing how much code is out there with archaic systems, and on shared hosting, that hasn't yet be owned. I know several people who have websites that shouldn't be running, the code is a security nightmare (and with traffic), yet no one is taking the effort to hack into the system. I guess there's just that many other easier targets...

I also can't imagine going shared hosting, no matter what the size of my company, blog, or just general website. Personally I've even gone beyond VPS because I like the idea of full control over the whole box, not just the VPS. If you can afford it, the extra piece of mind is worth it. And it's not that much more, especially if you're a business and can expense it ;)
