It's a bit slow on IE (relative to other DOM stuff), but it's got some brilliant shorthand methods for just about everything, is compatible with just about everything, and is all-around damn handy. The main add-on for widget-type stuff, Scriptaculous, is also mega sweet. They may not be viable under licenses and stuff, though. Idunno. Have you looked into Prototype?
