@anthony Your website sells your product. Your application is your product.

With web applications, the line blurs considerably. Your website might have a demo that launches part of your app, for instance. It can get even blurrier with free applications, where everybody may be visiting the same web page whether they buy into what you're doing or not.

But a free "application" is often really a website in disguise that's trying to sell you on a larger product, or programming language. So the distinction between what you're selling (your application) and how you're selling it (your website) still holds.

"Caching is a wonderful tool. You can use it to solve just about any performance problem. It solves it by replacing the problem with a cache expiration problem."

Great quote.

My god I never realised how buggy our site was, just ran a test for the first time and got 108 errors on one page!

Would agile development practices have spared you? Unit testing (for which RoR is well suited) would have nipped this in the bud, no? One of the hazards of relying on server scripts instead of your program to solve this problem. Can't your Rails app clear the cache once a day or on any frequency you request?
