Roughly 80% of my AdWords spend is on the content network. If I stop paying, I no longer get traffic from it -- which would be unfortunate, since typically my ads hang out right next to an article entitled How To Use Stupidly Labor-Intensive Methods To Make Bingo Cards. The contrast works heavily in my favor.

So to answer the question: no, I don't believe that I'd find free money by killing my AdWords spend. I seem to make about $1,000 per $500 spent according to conversion tracking -- I'll do that all night long, thanks.

Patrick - this is really unlreated to your post, but I was wondering about your Adwords spend. Have you ever considered shutting off Adwords for a week (or month) to see how that affects your profitability? I wonder how many conversions you would truly lose without Adwords....I bet a good percentage of people will still find you on Google without them.
