My first time living in Japan was 1975-1980. Your article was a flashback to those times and confirmed that the deeper cultural elements do not change much even though the superficial externals may. That being said, there are exceptions in every society and as an educated professional woman, foreigner who spoke Japanese (rare at that time), I was a successful businessperson in Japan. I believe this is because I understood and accepted the differences, found the common ground, knew my unique talents, and tuned into what was needed to build business relationships. And, I stayed open to continue to learn about myself and others. Thank you for your forum.

Great article.

One business where there is an advantage in locating in Japan is the business of reviving ski and hot spring resorts for sale/rent to foreigners. You need the local expertise (e.g. construction and maintenance in 雪国) but the market is elsewhere. Many local authorities will disappear as their populations decline - inward tourism for food, culture and recreation is on the increase and might help in some areas.

[…] » Doing Business in Japan The title sound dry and boring, but believe me, this is a long but highly interesting, insightful and even quite entertaining description of how Japanese work and business culture works.
