Patrick, congratulations! Both for your daughter and for the candor and openness of your business review. It really helps to follow your process because everyone can learn from the solutions you are seeking (and also found!) for your challenges.
I've been inspired by your words and shared my 2014 review in this post: http://www.lafabbricadellarealta.com/2014/12/29/2014-my-year-in-review/

"Is it weird to say that is distinct from actually wanting the money? I wouldn’t mind a little bit more to establish more of a buffer for my family, but other than that, money qua money doesn’t buy me anything I don’t already have. It might as well be WoW gold."

No, that is not weird at all. That is exactly how I feel about it.

Good luck in 2015,

Congratulations on a solid year Patrick.

I appreciate your perspective that having a bigger income past a certain level of comfort has quickly diminishing returns. After having a decent place to live, enough money to provide your family's basic living expenses, having reliable transportation and a nice laptop/access to all of the recurring monthly services you want, there's very little happiness that extra money can bring.

In the past, I made the mistake of optimizing solely for income at the expense of working on other currencies that would likely lead to more happiness (like having a better personal brand, having more free time, doing things outside of work I actually enjoy (like travel), etc.). It's always nice to hear another voice that says "Money isn't everything."
